Unhurried

It’s customary these days to choose a word as your theme for the upcoming year; from Build, to Declutter, to Joy, to Finish. I’ve chosen mine based on a pillar of Double Bond’s winemaking philosophy; Unhurried.

Before Christmas, I wished everyone an Unhurried New Year and although that might not be your word for 2020, I am positive we can all apply a little bit of the Double Bond Philosophy to our lives; to slow down, to savor, to wait until it (whatever ‘it’ is) is ready, and to not be busy for busy’s sake.

Now as you can image, New Year’s isn’t exactly a winery’s ‘favorite’ time of year. Everyone is resolute to spend less, drink less and reign in the luxuries such as that mid-week-just-because glass of wine.

But with the greatest respect to healthy aspirations, with my theme word in hand, I have a new take on Resolutions; resolve to drink better, to savor deeply and invest in all things with cascading layers on your palate.

You’ve no doubt seen the countless headlines of the potential cardiovascular and heart benefits of red wines. You’ve heard rumors of all of the high hopes for resveratrol and from your own experience know the relaxation of a standard 5 ounce pour of vino at the end of a too-long day.

Despite all of the research pouring in every week, the most important benefit of wine is as simple and essential as it gets- it’s something you purely enjoy.

No bells and whistles, no flashy headlines or long worded justifications. Just your enjoyment. Your calm, relaxed, unhurried enjoyment.

And in a world that spins faster and faster and faster still, I find deeper joy in something that reminds me on the busiest of days that there are some things that just shouldn’t be rushed… like life, like simple evenings, like a silent conversation with a well-aged New World take on an Old World classic, like a moment (albeit if only just a moment) to be undistracted and- well, you guessed it; unhurried.
